Jayankondam's full name is Jayankondacholapuram. The town's original name was Nellimanagaram. It was renamed "Jayankonda Cholapuram" — the city of the victorious Chola — in the time of King Rajendra Chola, after Rajendra and his son won many wars and campaigns.
Nearby Gangaikonda Cholapuram was founded by Rajendra Chola I around 1025 CE and served as the Chola capital for about 250 years. Its Brihadisvara Temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Jayankondam became a town panchayat during British rule and was later upgraded to the second municipality of Perambalur district. When Ariyalur district was formed in 2007 it became part of the new district. Large lignite deposits have been found in the area. Since 2009 Jayankondam has been part of the Chidambaram Lok Sabha constituency (earlier Perambalur).
