About Jayankondam
Jayankondam at a glance
Jayankondam is a municipal town in Ariyalur district, the headquarters of Udayarpalayam taluk, lying on the Trichy – Chidambaram road about 37 km east of Ariyalur. Its old name was Nellimanagaram, and it took the name Jayankondacholapuram in the time of Rajendra Chola, whose capital Gangaikonda Cholapuram — with its UNESCO-listed Brihadisvara temple — is just 10 km away. For a thousand years this has been Chola country, and the great temple, the Ponneri lake and the palace mounds at Maaligaimedu still draw visitors from across the world.
Today Jayankondam is the market and service town for the cashew-growing villages of the Jayankondam and T. Palur blocks. The area also holds large lignite deposits, long studied for mining and power. This website began here as a free local guide — shops, hospitals, bus timings, gold rate, news and jobs for Jayankondam — and now covers the neighbouring towns as well.
