Airavatesvara Temple, Darasuram
Built by the Chola emperor Rajaraja II in the 12th century, this Shiva temple at Darasuram near Kumbakonam is one of the three "Great Living Chola Temples" listed by UNESCO, together with Thanjavur and our own Gangaikonda Cholapuram. It is famous for its delicate stone carvings and its front hall shaped like a chariot. Combine it with Gangaikonda Cholapuram for a one-day Chola heritage trip.
