Vriddhagiriswarar Temple, Virudhachalam
Virudhachalam takes its name from this temple of Vriddhagiriswarar (Pazhamalainathar, "lord of the old hill"), sung in the Thevaram hymns as Thirumudhukundram. The goddess is Periyanayagi (Vriddhambikai), and the Manimuktha river is the temple's sacred water. The Chola-era temple is associated with Queen Sembiyan Mahadevi.
